10 year Skylea Carmack was reported missing in the evening of August 31, 2019 with an official missing persons report filed the following morning on September 1, 2019.
On September 4, 2019, Skylea’s step-mother, Amanda Carmack confessed to the police that she killed Skylea and that she was located in the shed behind their home. An autopsy revealed that Skylea died from strangulation which was consistent with the confession made by Amanda Carmack. Consequently, she was arrested and charged with Murder, Neglect of a dependent resulting in death, Domestic battery resulting in death, and Strangulation.
On September 6, 2019, a Notice to seek life imprisonment without parole was filed. Amanda Carmack was ordered to be held without bond at her initial hearing on September 9, 2019, and she opted to represent her self as a pro se’ defendant. However on September 17, 2019, she filed a motion requesting a public defender, and on September 20, 2019 the court appointed David Payne and Michael Hotz.
On October 9, 2019, a Motion for the Competency Evaluation of Amanda Carmack was ordered and granted. Two doctors, Dr. Parker and Dr. Krause were to give independent psychological evaluations of Carmack to determine whether or not she would be competent to stand trial. Dr. Parker’s psychiatric evaluation was completed and on record as of December 17, 2019, while Dr. Krause’s evaluation was added in on January 6, 2020.
A family member reached out to our very own Ashley Lopez and said Amanda Carmack is “competent to stand trial”. A pre-trial conference was held January 8, 2020 and the jury trial remains set for February 3, 2020. WMTV channel 27 will be there to bring you updates as they happen.
