Channel 27’s Richarh Tyson recently sat down with a local man to discuss his continued search for a new kidney.
Gilbert Bazan Sr. told Richarh that he has been doing dialysis since April 24, 2019. The search for a new kidney for Gilbert has been hindered by the fact that his blood type is O+, for which it is difficult to find an organ. Nevertheless, Gilbert remains on the transplant list through Indiana University in Indianapolis. If the kidney comes from someone who is deceased, it can take up to eight years for IU to procure a kidney of Gilbert’s blood type.
One way Gilbert could bypass that years-long wait is by finding a live donor who is willing to part with one of their kidneys to help save Gilbert’s life. The family has been advertising as widely as possible for their need to find an O+ live kidney donor.
When asked what the experience of searching for a kidney has been like, Rhonda Bazan, Gilbert’s wife, told Richarh, “It’s been an up and down experience, seeing him as a strong man in the battle that he fights day by day now… Our trust is in God, and we believe that God is going to bring the right kidney along. We hope somebody out there prays about it and feels it on their heart to be tested to see if they’re a candidate. All the testing and the surgery donation part is free. Our insurance will pay for everything.”
The Bazan family has created a website to help in their search for a kidney for Gilbert. Across the top of the website is the statement “I Believe In Miracles From Heaven.” The website also includes this description of Gilbert’s condition and needs:
I need a kidney transplant as soon as possible. A kidney transplant will save my life. I have end stage renal disease (kidney failure) which means my kidneys are working below 10%. After 5 years of fighting ups and downs, it came to an end April 24th 2019 when I had to start dialysis. I do dialysis 3 days a week at a clinic 4 hours a day. I am searching for a living kidney donor.
There is no cost to a donor. My insurance covers all tests and procedures. We appreciate your support and covet your prayers. WE BELIEVE IN THE POWER OF PRAYER!!
The Bazans have also included the following contact information, in case anyone has any questions about the testing and/or donation process:
