In the early morning hours of Sunday, May 3, 2020, Indianapolis police were called to a shooting incident that took place in the 6000 block of East 38th Street. When officers arrived, they found that a 16-year-old Nya Mae Cope, of Marion, had been struck by a stray bullet while riding in a car with her family.
Cope was transferred to an Indianapolis area hospital, where doctors worked on her but were ultimately unable to save her life.
Cope’s mother and sister were also in the car when the incident took place, but neither of them were injured.
The incident is still being investigated by Indianapolis homicide detectives, the Indianapolis-Marion County Forensic Services Agency, as well as the Marion County Coroner’s Office.
