Ella Mae Bass, 83, Marion, IN, gently slipped away in her slumber at 4:35 pm on Wednesday, June 3, 2020, at Wesleyan Health Care & Rehabilitation Center in Marion. She was born in Hollandale, Mississippi, on Saturday, June 13, 1936, to Ike and Luella (Gordon) Shelly. On August 16, 1959, she married Otha D. Bass, and he survives.
Ella worked as a machine attendant for ten years with St. Regis Paper Company, retiring in 1984. She loved fishing, sewing, upholstering, and gardening. She was also very artistic. She enjoyed feeding the birds and squirrels while sitting on her porch. She was an excellent cook and loved baking. Ella’s hobby was repairing and restoring discarded sewing machines. She treated everyone with respect and received that same respect in return. Her grandchildren were the light of her life. Her sense of humor will also be greatly missed.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by her daughter, Joan Shelly-Brown of Marion; son, Allen (Betty) Bass of Marion; sisters, Irene (Charles) Dixon of Ypsilanti, MI, and Carrie B. Bullock also of Ypsilanti, MI; grandchildren, Andre’ Bass of Marion, Tashanda Bass of Marion, Lakeisha Jackson of Fort Wayne, Allen Bass, Jr., of Muncie, Anthony Ford of Muncie, James Brown of Marion, David Brown of Marion, Dontez Bass of Marion, Denetric Guess of Greenwood, MS, Serderick Ewing of Marion, Terrence Ewing of Greenwood, MS, and Travoris Ewing of Marion; Cobey Duren of Marion, and Gladys Duren of Greenwood, MS; brothers-in-law, John Henry Ware of Greenville MS, Eugene Ware of Greenvllie MS, Earl Lee Ware of Jacksonville, FL, Charles Ware Greenville, MS, and Freddy Ware of Greenville MS; sister-in-law, Inez Ware-Brackett of Greenville, MS; and a host of loving great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Ella was preceded in death by three sisters, Alberta Gordon, Ruby Marble, and Johnnie Mae Shelly, as well as two brothers, Ike Shelly, and James Shelly.
The family will receive visitors from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm on Friday, June 12, 2020 at Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral Service, North Chapel, 1341 N. Baldwin Ave., Marion, IN.
Immediately following the time of visitation, a memorial service to celebrate Ella’s life will begin at 1:00 pm with Rev. Stanford Bolden officiating.
