What the Future Holds for Marion Football’s Coach Chambers

by Holland Martin

This week, Marion High School head football coach, Craig Chambers, announced his resignation from the school in order to become the Assistant Athletic Director and head football coach at Arsenal Tech High School in Indianapolis.

In four seasons with the Giants, Chambers helped turn the football program totally around. Marion went 34-13 during that exciting time, the high point being the 2018 campaign when the team won in amazing fashion and beat Mooresville 19-13 to make it to Semi-State. Despite losing to Evansville Central, the foundation was set, and the Giants went on to finish 9-3 in 2019.

Speaking with Channel 27 News, Coach Chambers said one of the reasons for leaving was family-related. Working over an hour away from loved ones, while having school and sports responsibilities here up to seven days a week, played a role in his decision. In addition, he has a daughter attending high school this fall, and these next four years are very crucial for him to be an everyday presence for her.

Affectionately known as “Coach Craig,” Chambers says his best memories here are of watching the young students growing up responsibly, graduating, and then seeing them thrive in college and beyond. His best memories on the field, he says, are from that magical 13-1 Semi-State season.

Looking ahead to the Arsenal Tech Titans 2020 football season, Chambers says it is still too early to think about what kind of team he will have this fall. The team finished last season 5-5 (4-3) in the NCC but looks to improve with the addition of a very knowledgeable and cohesive coaching staff.

Tech is scheduled to face the Giants football team on October 9th at the Dick Looters Football Stadium, in what should be a hard-hitting and competitive contest.

Coach Chambers said Marion is truly a special place, and he gets emotional when he thinks about how the community welcomed him and has been so kind throughout his time in Grant County. He said he will be rooting for the Marion Giants every week, except for when they play the Tech Titans.

Channel 27 News and Entertainment would like to thank Coach Chambers for his time here and wish him the best of luck as he helps lead another group of young people to success in life.
